Skilled nursing facility is the current term for what used to be known as nursing home or convalescent home. These facilities have medical personnel on site 24-hours a day. Nurses here are able to provide medical treatment for conditions that an assisted living could not legally perform. Examples are feeding tubes, injections, IV therapy, and late-stage bed sores.

Skilled Nursing facilities provide short-term care for rehabilitation, and long-term care for custodial care patients who have Medi-cal. Long-term care at a skilled nursing facility is not covered by Medicare, or private health insurance. It must be paid privately, or by Medi-cal.
